I won the roll off and decided to go first. Even with Xerxis’s field marshal i know skorne are fairly slow so i wanted to get as far up the board as i could to apply a lot of pressure to my opponent and force him into either coming into my threat range or giving up all of the real estate. Deployments where pretty standard with me deploying my forces in quite a wide line. His deployment was interesting. He put all three of his heavies on one flank keeping them in the bronzeback bubble and applying pressure to one side.
Circle – Turn 1:
A pretty standard first turn, i ran up with all of my things with my manakins at the very front. I warped Wumwood over to threaten a flag to force my opponent to bring some of his forces over to it and put a forest up in front of him.
Skorne – Turn 1:
My aggressive approach really caught my opponent off guard. My list has a good amount of shooting in it and advancing any amount would put him into threat range of it. He decided to focus his force primarily towards the centre. Swinging his trio of elephants around towards the zone, keeping tibbers and Orin within 3 inches of Xerxis for shield guard and the spell denial however due to where he wanted to move Xerxis and the order he wanted to do it in he ended up with Orin a little further forward than was safe. He advanced his beast handlers up but kept them just outside of walk and spray range of my manakins to keep them safe, the cats swung round the flag that wurmwood was threatening after the willbreaker made them tough and the Incindiarii drifted a template onto a manakin, killing it off. Xerxis put up ignite on the cats and Rapport on Tibbers.
Circle – Turn 2:
I knew this would be an important turn, it was opportunity to get a good ranged alpha onto him to soften him up. I knew my first priority was to kill off Orin as he is a pain in the bum for Wurmwood. Thankfully he was in a position i could reach quite easily, my manakins moved up and with a boosted spray i removed him from the board. The plan then was to run Cassius up, arc a curse of shadows onto Tibbers and then dark path cassius back to safety. Unfortunately… I was a bit of a goon. The plan started well and i arced the curse of shadows onto Tibbers successfully, but then completely forgot about dark path and instead decided to hellmouth the Incindiarii. I left two of them on 1 box and then realized my error. Cassius looked at me with disappointment… The next part of the plan was to shoot Tibbers off the board. With an enemy upkeep and curse of shadow on him my two Shrimp had a 67.96% chance of killing him. Two shrimp, a boosted Pureblood spray, two 4 man reeve CRAs and a manakin spray later and Tibbers still stood there. Silently laughing at me. After this setback i was a little worried, I decided to run/charge the kitties with one unit of my Bloodweavers and i managed to kill one of them off and jam the others up, and with my other unit i just ran them up into the elephants faces to try and make his life a little difficult. The few reeves that couldn’t get to Tibbers and a couple of spare Manikins threw out some stray shots at the Bronzeback doing a little bit of chip damage to him.
Skorne – Turn 3:
My opponent started by dropping Rapport on Tibbers. His beast handlers moved up and healed Tibby giving him his aspects back with one in B2B with each beast for prodding with another one to enrage all three. The Bronzeback started the party by trampling over three Bloodweavers and a Manakin, needing 7s on the Weavers he boosts one and hard rolls the other two killing all three along with the Manakin. He was left just a hair out of range of one of my shrimps. His Bronzeback then slammed a manakin in an attempt to turn it into a tree seeking missile, the manakin hits my Pureblood instead of my caster and does nothing but vaporize the little manakin. Tibbers then charges Cassius and shows what an accomplished golfer he is by smiting him back into a reeve, turning them both into a fine red mist. The Incindiarii take some shots over at my Reeves killing off a couple while the cats chow down on my Weavers, killing all but one of them. The Willbreaker puts tough on the cats again and he passes play.
Circle – Turn 3:
I begin my turn by upkeeping Curse of Shadows. Despite Tibbers only being on 5 boxes he had dropped the upkeep on him and the way my dice had been i didn’t trust i could do it without it. I opened up by clearing out his beast handlers with a couple of sprays and my remaining 3 Bloodweavers getting use out of bloodburst with my third spray overachieving and killing off 3 Incindiarii. My one Bloodweaver on the other flank tried to hit one of the cats to grieves it but unfortunately missed. My shrimps opened up on Tibbers again, boosting the damage as much as they can but it still took two of them to finally drop him… Phew. My other unit of Manikins activated and unit charged into the Objective and the Bronzeback, i did nothing to the objective but with a boost managed to do a few extra boxes to the Bronzeback. My Feral walked up to a couple of cats and slapped them down (The only thing he did all game besides bring primal, woo go 18 points of nothing!) I then fired a curse of shadows at the Bronzeback as there was a sliver of LoS that i could draw from Wurmwood. I cast primal on my Pureblood and feated. I then walked my Pureblood up to melee range with both of the beasts, warped strength and due to my few stray ranged shots on the Bronzeback earlier in the game, managed to wipe out both of the heavies with him. I end my turn and with that my opponent shakes my hand.
This was far from a perfectly played game by either of us but it was a great deal of fun and despite my opponent being very new to the game he played exceptionally well and a lot of the struggles he faced was down to the match up. Discussing it afterwards we thought that he just didn’t have enough attacks to chew through all of my guys and get to my beasts and even with the speed buff that Xerxis brings he had to endure at least a turn or two of shooting.
