Holla holla, dolla dolla.
Brief tournament report from over the weekend, mostly because I took no pics and huge swathes of text makes for tedious reading.
Bunch of the guys from Team Inverted went up to Chorley for a 16 man SR. We consisted of Chris running Grymkin (Dreamer/OW2), Ben with his Ret (Ossyan/Rahn), Mark with his Legion (Lyyth3/Twins) and Ste with his Trolls (Madrak1/Kolgrima), as well as myself with Rask and Arkadius. The faction spread was… strange… a full quarter of the players had Grymkin (clearly they’re balanced, more on that later), there was another minion player as well as me and only a single Cygnar/Khador. So dodging Grymkin was going to be difficult…
My lists were –
Arkadius, Targ, 2 x Warhog, 2 x Roadhog, 2 x Gorax, Gunboar, Splatterboar, 2 x Razorboar, Orin Midwinter, Mist Speaker, Trawler, 2 x Witch Doctor (Will Work For Food)
Rask, Wrastler, 2 x Bone Swarm, Sacral Vault, Totem Hunter, Pendrake, Mist Speaker, Trawler, Feralgeist, max Croak Raiders, Max Posse, Swamp Shamblers, min Ambushers (Blindwater)
Now I went with the intention of getting more practice with my Rask list, with the Arkadius list as my comfort drop in case I was really stuck (been playing it for years, he’s my main man). That did not happen.
I get drawn up against Leon, who I know from a menoth messenger group we’re both in but we’ve never met. After the jokes about how neither of us have brought the one faction we have in common, we get started.
He’s brought Cryx and drops Denny1 (other caster was Goreshade3), and I drop Arkadius. I figure I can’t drop Rask because I have to feat after he does and he can just save his knowing I cant feat, and arc-nodes get around my feat anyway (EDIT – no they don’t, fool). At least with Arkadius I can hang back outside of 21 inches of Denny and still threaten his stuff.
He’s got Denny1, Malice,, Cankerworm some arc-nodes, max banes with UA, min blackbanes, Aiaikos with 2 stalkers, withershadow, Tartarus.
I go second (of course), he runs up, and I just position almost everything outside of 21 of Denny except a few lights, nothing worth feating on at least.
He runs up again, a ‘node gets within arc’ing range of my splatter but he manages to miss a boosted and a non-boosted attempt at landing Crippling Grasp on it! I return with feat and kill Malice, one Stalker, all but 2 Blackbanes (including Blackbane himself), about half the bane warriors, take out the arcnode on one chicken and use the trawler to drag the other one way out of Denny’s control!
Leon hits back, popping his feat to catch most of my army bar some solos at the back. He manages to kill a Roadhog, a Gorax and both Razorboars and I consider myself having got off lucky! I kill what I can, focusing on spells and ranged attacks to maximise damage, leaving one blackbane and a few banes alive and also taking out Cankerworm and Tartarus with some spiked rolls.
Unfortunately I’ve left Arkadius bare in order to kill Canks so Leon sees and opportunity as attrition is not going his way and I’ve got beasts lurking near his zones and caster. He NEEDS to kill one of the witchdocs blocking Arkadius for a landing zone for a fully fueled Stalker, so Denny has to commit with Venoms, but it toughs, which totally bones the plan. Arkadius lands his own Crippling Grasp on her and the first Warhog swing puts her down.
Good game, total slaughter on both sides and we both scored CPs every turn so it was never a concern and we could focus on beating the hell out of each other instead!
Drawn up against Konrad and his Grymkin (Dreamer/OW2). Konrad is, by all accounts, a very good player, so I know I’m dropping Arkadius because a) it’s the list I can play easier and b) when I don’t know what my opponent’s lists can do, go for the comfort pick. He drops Dreamer in Menagerie (bunch of heavies, lights and crabbits, loads of gremlin swarms, one min unit of dread rots, the battle engine)
I go second again (jesus…), Konrad runs his stuff up as far as he can without unnecessarily allowing me a turn 1 mass slaughter feat, with Mirage on a S&M and putting Artifice down somewhere awkward. I position very timidly actually; he out-threats me with his gorehounds and rattlers unless I feat, and I’m not feating just to take 3 lights when there’s 3 heavies with Manifest Destiny waiting… so I advance staying out of threats and manage to spike some hit rolls to take the nearest gorehound down to 2 boxes!
Without much to do, Konrad continues the advance, trying to keep the heavies back while tempting me forward with lights (this time with well spaced crabbits for shield guards this time, with the injured gorehound retreating and the dread rots flanking hard for a zone). Unfortunately Konrad has killboxed himself so I go to 2-0. I’m still unwilling to commit unless I get at least 2 heavies so I try to leverage my ranged game, finishing off the injured gorehound, killing a swarm and a crabbit. One Roadhog goes into a close Gorehound and manages to kill it and afford sprint to get back to safety (Arkadius had softened it up with a Primal Shock, and Konrad used Ruin to deny one of the Shocks and remove Forced Evo off the second Roadhog). The other Roadhog, now Evo-less, has to use all his Fury to kill a close Rattler so can’t sprint unfortunately. The trawler came on to kill a dreadrot and hopefully stop them making it to the zone next turn.
Konrad has targets this turn, and makes the most of it. Manifest destiny goes up, Dreamer Abyssal Gates the Roadhog who couldn’t sprint and it gets eaten by a Cage Rager. The ‘rots smash the Trawler unsurprisingly. Swarms and crabbits and phantasms (oh my) are all over the place blocking lanes and the S&M hang back in reserve.
This is where I lose the game, as I’m 2-0 up, clocks are running down and I’m ahead on attrition. There’s going to be very little scoring as long as I can deny the zone the ‘rots are heading towards and Dreamer can’t come forward to score as long as my feat is waiting. I could wait this out… Instead I see 2 heavies in range and get greedy. Feat still only manages to kill the Cage Rager and a rattler plus some other chaff, so both S&M are good to go and staring down my Warhogs who failed… I also wasted so much time this turn that I’m down to about 2 minutes on clock.
Konrad puts the nail in the coffin by popping Manifest Destiny, the S&M’s eat my Warhogs and he just sits pretty. I activate and clock out mid-activations.
I feel I could have won this if the voice in the back of my head preaching for patience was louder. Getting given a 2CP lead from a player as good as Konrad does not happen often and I should have tried to stall out the game. But, such is life and I can’t begrudge the loss!
Round 3 (The Semi Finals – 3 out of 4 players in the semi’s are GRYMKIN)
When you go to a tournament with a bunch of mates you’re almost guaranteed to face one of them. And this round I get Mark. Who I had played mere days ago in the Rask vs Twins luck-fest -_-
I know I’m not dropping Rask, because the last Twins win was a lucky break and his other list is an infantry-mulching 6 huge bases list (Lylyth3, Archangel, 2 x Throne, 2 x Vault). I drop Arkadius, hoping for the huge bases list because it seems trivial to kill it on paper, but he drops Twins.
This is short. I win first. FINALLY. I rile for speed on the Roadhogs and run absolutely everything forwards. My entire battlegroup is pretty much on the center line, and it is glorious.
I finally get to experience it; the look on your opponent’s face when they realise “I can’t come forwards because everything will die, but I can’t stay back because he wins on scenario…”. Mark spends a long time on what usually would be a trivial 3 minute “run everything” first turn. In the end, considering the rough position he’s in, he calls my bluff and everything comes forwards, including both the Twins further forward than everything else, glutted on transfers and with a Protector inbetween them. He’s basically calling me out; “Kill both the Twins this turn, or lose”.
So, being a gentleman, I indulge him.
As insurance, a Warhog walks up and kills a Throne and the Trawler comes in and removes the Harm member of the blackfrost. Arkadius feats, mostly for positioning but I make 2 boosted attacks on Rhyas with a pair of heavies, both of which miss, and both of which get riposted for a handful of damage. Because of the Feat, a gorax can walk up to the Protector, and throws him at Saeryn, knocking them all down. A Roadhog walks up to Rhyas, lands the boosted 10 for a throw on her and Mark concedes.
It was fair enough, I had a potential 19 attacks ranging from boosted pow 10’s up to pow 18 to then lay into the Twins which was more than enough to get through their combined 9 transfers now that they’re auto-hitting. If either of the KD’s hadn’t landed I’d still feel decent about the game: if Saeryn goes down then all the beasts are testing for frenzy at least and nothing can Slipstream Rhyas to get to Arkadius; if only Rhyas goes down then I can block Saeryn in because she doesn’t have Acrobatics to get close to Arkadius.
Squeeky bum time, last round and I’m locked into Rask. I’m up against Paul with Legion (again) and he drops Twins (again…). Hist list is very different to the previous one; Children of the Dragon theme, loads of infantry (Swordsmen, Raptors, Brigands) and Wrongeye & Snapjaw and a minimal battlegroup of Zuriel and a Protector plus some support solos. I feel better into this than against Mark’s double throne list anyway…
Paul goes first and runs up, condensing his initial spread out deployment into more of a brick to account for all my ambushing units. The swordsmen are Occultation’d, and his Brigands have Prey’d my Posse. I carefully advance up, to prepare for my feat, making sure nothing is within walk +5 of Zuriel to allow him to spray my tightly packed ranks, put a Veil of Mists down to hamper his Brigands (even though I’ve feated, durrr), stick Admonition on the Wrastler and Fury on the Boneswarm heading towards Snapjaw. The Vault guns down a couple of Swordsmen.
As per usual, it’s a Rask feat turn so not much to be done for Paul. The Swordsmen run half a dozen guys in to tie up the croaks, a spell martyr runs up allowing Saeryn to get Marked For Death on the croaks (EDIT – shouldn’t have happened, oh well), everything else positions and waits! I bring in all my ambushing stuff; the bog trogs get to 3 or 4 brigands and take them down, the Trawler wiffs on the Raptor he could reach. The Posse send one member in to eat another brigand and the Boneswarm with Fury eats another (stack dem corpses). Between the totem hunter, croaks and the Vault the Swordsmen are reduced to a single guy. Rask Paralyses Snapjaw for a laugh and sits pretty!
Paul see’s the opportunity for carnage with Rhyas and a good counter punch. The Raptors kill a bunch of croaks and tough Pendrake, and the lone Swordsman walks back to get rid of the Trawler. Rhyas charges in and finishes all bar 3 of the packed croaks and also kills a Boneswarm, followed up by the Protector behind her. Snapjaw kills the jamming Posse member and the brigands kill 3 of the ambushers and charge the other boneswarm for very little.
I see an opportunity of my own and can’t resist. The Bokor and Shamblers position and the Bokor lands the boosted Hand of Glory to make Rhyas Stationary. The Wrastler wanders over and RFPs her (living the dream), while the remaining croaks with help from Pendrake’s Beast Lore take chunks out of the Protector. The Vault and Totem hunter clear out one zone, with the bog trogs and boneswarm clearing the other of brigands, while the mist speaker runs onto my flag. My feralgeist runs next to his flag and I’m up 3-0.
Bit of a rough turn for Paul but he makes of it what he can. Zuriel flits over the central building into combat with a bunch of croaks and the wrastler, who promptly admonitions away . He kills the croaks and killshot’s over Rask, doing a bit of damage. Saeryn arcs a couple of Razor Wind’s at him through Zuriel but doesn’t even make it though his health, much less the 3 transfers and 5 shambler extra lives sitting close by. He contests both the zones but not my flag so it’s 4-0 to me, and I end my turn immediately to go 5-0 instead of dragging it out. Paul kindly gives me the army points for the things that clearly would have died in my turn if I could be arsed rolling the dice (wrastler kills zuriel, vault and totem hunter kill all the raptors, Posse finish off the brigands).
So, finished the day 3-1, which I was over the moon about. The quality of players there was really good so I would have been happy enough with 2-2, but 3-1 takes the cake!
So, whats next?
Definitely want to look into the Maelok infantry spam list more, and therefore change the beast list into the much-lauded Rask Super Friends list (Rask and all the lesser warlocks) and see how that goes. Also need to try that new Jaga-Jaga hotness, so stay tuned for more reports coming after the festive period!
Hope you all have a great Xmas and New Year!
Till next time!
