Morty vs Damiano Trenchers
First game with Morty so no real plan. Go forward and grind I guess.
I’m playing my morty list (some merc lights are playing the part of cetrati)
2 x Max trenchers + grenades
Nomads x 3
2 x min Halbs
min Boomhowlers (ambush)
Scenario – Dumb Bell
I win the roll to go fist. Hollow goes up on the swordsmen, safeguard on morty and then he advances. Krea animus and charge, everything else runs up with a few swordsmen in assault range and a few cats in krea and dodge range.
He assaults and shoots some trenchers and one cat (deadeye goes on trenchers on the right to hit Kats on the hill and in krea range, sure foot on the left hand unit). Everything else positions up to be out of threat range of everything bar kats and be in range to threat scenario elements etc.
I see a void spirit party opening. Eilish walks up, pops off the upkeep and transports out the way. Despoiler charges into the trenchers and gets a void spirit. The void spirit walks to the middle trencher, shanks him, and then ports to the group on the right. He could have killed the whole unit but missed a boosted 6 so that lovely bunch of infantry got to live. Swordsmen charge in, kats clear out the right zone to score, cetrati brick up, Krea covers them under aura, Morty brings back the kats, safeguards, camps and feats.
With feat up Mark struggles to do anything, I’m in both zones and my dudes are annoying. He clears lanes on the left and manages to get a nomad to despoiler but does not kill it. Deathmarch and CMA kills some kats with halbs and at the end of the turn, Mark has cleared a few models and feated. I score another in the right zone to go to 2-0
Hollow stays, despoiler gets healed to fully operational, revive brings back kats, right zone is cleared again, Rhadman and some kats clear stannis and put damage on the nomad. Cetrati position to threat anything getting through the wall of kats, Despoiler with enrage and darkshround dings up the nomad but leaves him with an arm and cortex. I do get another despoiler through so all but 1 of the trenchers die. Morty starts running away and camping. At the end of my turn Mark has one one dinged up heavy, one scratched heavy, support models and a few trenchers and is 3-0 on scenario.
Boomhowlers ambush, nomad clears despoiler and wails on some kats. unfortunately at that point Mark clocks.
Morty is a grind machine. Doing a tonne of work, bringing back high value pieces and having such a disruptive feat is very strong. The void spirit can easily win a game vs infantry heavy builds if you are not careful
Things I learnt:
- Kats do more than you think they will. With CMA and the boosted pounces they just put damage out every turn and can grind very effectively.
- Layering swordsmen is important – you need to have an idea of how many bodies you are happy to give up/how many souls you want. Too aggressive early on and you end up with too much fury one turn and nothing to do with it.
- Despoiler – when to commit despoiler is an important part to get right. Lose him too early and you may struggle with heavy armour.
