Back on the proverbial horse!
It’s been a busy week since last time; not so much in terms of actual play time but in terms of amassing the crocs. Significant amounts of shady deals and exchanges in darkened alleys have left me much the poorer in wallet and Mercenary models used for trades, but I’m now very close to having everything I want for Blindwater! Not bad for a couple of weeks “work”!
I’ve also been discussing lists with club-mates, and shamelessly stealing lists from players better than I, which leads into today’s reports…
Long story short, I persuaded Rich Beech (the one bombarding the blog with Skorne reports) to hassle Mike Dick (who recently got Best Minions and 2nd Place I think at Blood & Oil) for the lists he was using, and got his Calaban list, which I slightly altered and ended up with…
Calaban, Targ, 2 x Spitter, Swamp Horror, Blindwalker, Snapper
Rorsh & Brine, Battle Boar
This is in WWFF and is using the CID rules, which amounts to the list saving 3 points, the animi of the Snapper/Spitters being 1 less and the Horror having 4 inch reach.
Against Chris Young running…
Dreamer, 3 x Cage Rager, 2 x Skin & Moans, Rattler, Crabbit
Min Dread Rots
8,000 gremlin swarms
In Dark Menagerie so there’s corpses everywhere and all sorts of stuff is free. He’s taken the “no spell” and “-2 spd” arcana’s as well as her “KD” one.
If it’s not already obvious, I don’t have a lot of experience into Grymkin. In fact this is my first game into them that isn’t Old Witch 2 and thus my first time seeing Arcana.
Long story short, he wins first turn (me losing first turn while using WWFF is becoming somewhat of a meme now) and runs up, I run up in response. He advances up cautiously but puts plenty of stuff in my threat. I commit fully with buffs and spells and beasts and kill nothing. Not a model. Dice were terrible and I got massively caught out by an Arcana too so I called it.
In hindsight even if I pulled off everything I wanted to, he would still be left with 3 heavies, which with Manifest Destiny easily clean up my heavies. Not sure what to do there…
Onto game 2 against Paul with his Menoth!
Severius1, Heirophant, Blessing of Vengeance, Reckoner
Durant1, 2 x Redeemer
Vessel of Judgement
Rhoven & the boys
Max Idrians with UA
In Creators Might!
Deployment looks like this –
(The wrastler is a Blindwalker and the random shambler is the Mist Speaker… I said I’ve got ALMOST everything)
Paul wins first turn (because I’m running WWFF and this is just my life now), has Def ward on the Idrians and Vision on Blessing and pretty much just pelts forwards with everything.
Unfortunately for Paul he doesn’t realise that his Idrians are staring down an arcnode, Hex blast, and guns.
The Blindwalker makes himself into an arcnode and tramples closer to the Idrians. Calaban feats, Hex Blasts Def Ward off the idrians, and between more spells courtesy of Rorsh’s gun, Alten, and the Vault rolling 3 souls to begin manage to kill 9 of them. Bit disheartening. Left flank just storms up.
(where’d the idrians go?)
The scary thing here is Paul is now effectively 20 points down, and this game still goes the distance…
Paul responds with a crippling barrage of firepower and spells, killing the Blindwalker, the Swamp Horror and Orin with a lucky deviation (first mistake, I had Stealth on the Vault because it was the Idrian’s Prey… not much use when there’s only 2 of them in range of it. Should have had Occultation on a beast). Luckily the right flank is basically untouched so that’s what I’ll be focusing on.
(where’d my beasts go?!?!?)
Well that was… rough. I was expecting to lose the Blindwalker but the Horror and Orin too? I severely misjudged the ranged output of Paul’s list so it’s time to shift to scenario mode. Durant sat his ass on his flag with 2 shield guards so that’s not getting removed, but I’ve got an easy 2 points on my side if I can remove 2 Idrians. The battle boar puts Primal on Brine, who, after getting Diversionary’d up by Rorsh, charges the furthest Idrian, overtakes off him and rips the cortex and melee arm off the Reckoner. Alten shoots the other Idrian and the Vault just runs up into the zone. On the other flank I just shuffle around slightly with the Spitters and Targ and pump 3 shots into the nearest Redeemer, doing loads of damage but unluckily leaving all systems intact. Calaban tries to take another system off the Reckoner but rolls badly. I sit with only 5 fury on the table because I’m pretty sure Paul feats next turn… Score is 2-1 to me.
(no pic sorry)
Due to some very unfortunate placing, one of the Redeemers is out of Durant’s control, which takes a possible assassination off the table luckily for me. The Reckoner and a charging idrian take Brine down to 3 health, and the Vessel and a charging Redeemer leave the painted Spitter on about 6 health and on fire. Paul feats and I’ve mismeasured my painted spitter so not only is he missing 2 aspects and on fire, but he’s going to frenzy next turn too! Scores go to 3-2 to me.
In my turn the Spitter frenzies but misses, as does Brine. Plan is still to focus on the right and deny the left to Paul. Alten tries to fire into the Brine combat to kill the idrian but misses and basically blows Brine’s brains out (sick alliteration bro). Rorsh plinks some damage onto the Reckoner now it’s free and the Vault finishes it off, along with some Choir boys. The other Spitter walks up to the closest Redeemer and beats him down, while the Snapper runs up to stop him being pushed out of the zone. Mist Speaker chills behind the forest like he’s done all game and Calaban just camps and keeps Occultation on himself behind the building. Scores go to 5-3 to me.
Paul see’s an opportunity to swing the scenario back to his favour! The Vessel blows chunks out of the unpainted spitter and manages to kill Targ and the other Spitter with Admonisher jumps! The remaining Redeemer follows up pelting it with rockets which don’t do much but end up killing the Snapper with blast damage (what happened to Girded?). Sevvy finally steps up and blows it away with boosted Immolations, allowing Blessing to charge my objective, but he can’t quite seal the deal. Scores go to 7-5 to me.
We’re are being pressured to finish up, so we talk it through; Calaban puts parasite on his objective and hits it with a boosted pow 16 Hex blast and the Vault with 3 souls puts two more boosted damage pow 16’s into it, and the Mist Speaker who has been hiding all game runs into his zone within 4 of the flag, game ends 10-5 to me.
Goddamn what a game! I hate to think how much rougher that would have been with a max unit of Idrians doing work too, but that is a scary list!
Overall, not a huge fan of Calaban but I’m going to keep trying it and see how it goes. Apparently it’s nuts into the common Ghost Fleet cryx builds so I’ll have to see if I can find one!
Also the eagle-eyed among you may have noticed that the Trawler sat on the sidelines all game in both games… Worth.
Till next time!
