WMH has an enormous amount of casters and warlocks. You can face an almost infinite amount of army/caster/scenario combinations which is part of the fun and depth of the game. It also makes list building and planning a nightmare!
While the game is really well balanced, at any one time in the meta there are a set of casters/builds that are leading the pack. We’ve listed what we think these are for each faction and what they do. While this is our list you’ll notice that each faction has a lot of options which just shows you what a good place the game is in! We’ll update this as things change – check back to see how things are shaping up!
This will depend on your meta however this is what we’re teching for at the mo. There are undoubtedly other casters/builds viable in every faction but you have to start somewhere!
Cygnar – Haley2/Nemo3/Stryker1
Khador – Hark/Vlad2/Rockets (vlad1/butcher1)
Protectorate – Amon/Sev2/HR
Ret – Kae/Rahn/Issyria
Convergence – Mother/Father
Cryx – Theme/Coven/Denny1
Mercs – Ossrum/Damiano/Thexus
Legion – Lylth3/Abby2/Thags1
Trolls – Ragnor/Calandra/?
Skorne – Mak2/?
Circle – WW/Baldur2/K2
Minions – Rask/Rask
Cygnar is in a great place right now and has a number of viable options in a 2/3 list format. There are even talks of competitive pairings having no Haleys involved….(what is the world coming to?!?!?). Of course Haley is still really strong and a caster you always need to prep for! The themes also have done a huge amount for Cygnar and you can expect to see a lot of them over the next few months. So the lists:
Haley2 – Storm Division
There are also some great lists with multiple jacks, storm blades and even the jakes double hunter build (it can shoot into your deployment zone on the top of 1)
Stryker1 – Storm Division
This list is a ball breaker – arm 27 stormwall? Ranged disruption and knockdown? It’s quick, it hits hard and it can be invincible for a round. It’s also really good into cygnar, which is good for cygnar as they sometimes struggle into…. cygnar.
Nemo3 – Stormdivision
– Firefly x3
This list puts out such a huge amount of fire power. The leaps shred infantry, guns kill everything and nemo can pull off some crazy assassinations with his slam spell. Even against LOS denial, it can run jacks/lances into places and leap off of them for boosted pow 12’s (which kill a lot). Def one to watch
Honourable mention to Haley 3 – she is amazing and always a strong caster to play into.
Menoth are another faction with some great options. High Reclaimer has just been toned back but he’s again still a monster.
– Scourge of Heresy
Allegiant of the fist (kick monk)
Choir of Menoth
Knights Exemplar + officer
Knights Exemplar + officer
Idrians + UA
So this list has everything – assassination, scenario and attrition. The feat was just toned down but it can still bring about a huge amount of damage and the feat angles are really difficult to protect against. HR will probably have a cloud wall up from turn 2 and HOF on any units makes any unit a monster.
– 4/7 Derishers
– 2/4 Templars/Heavies
This is a lot of boxes, it’s fast and it hits like a truck with synergy and choir. Builds are varying and there are some colossal builds floating about that are pretty scary. Amon is already a weak link in this matchup – if you can get a bead on him he does go down to some decent fire.
Notable mentions go to Sev2, Reznik, Thyra and Feora3.
Khador have such a huge stable of viable casters so you could see anything. The key ones
IFP + UA
Shocktroopers + UA
– 3x Rockets
This is an attrition monster and it hits like a brick. Tough no knock down makes it really hard to get through the list and pow 13’s 4 dice on the charge is huge. Irusk2 was a mainstay and then circle/WW got toned down so you don’t see him everywhere now. He’s still a great caster and we expect him to show up a lot in tournaments.
Hark – Theme
– 3 Kodiaks
– 3/4 Jacks
– Winterguard stuff
The exact build changes but it’s that at its core. A lot of steel and some support. Usually you see 3 kodiaks in which gives Khador a cloud wall (Kodiaks steam to create 4″ clouds and then reposition 3″ out of the cloud which means they are out of LOS by a smidge of an inch.
Last but not least: Rockets.
The WG theme has made rockets and WG even more amazing. They can be run with any caster that makes them sing; shout outs to Butcher1 and Vlad1:
Winterguard RC Min and 3 x Rockets x 3 (9 rockets total!!!!!!)
Winter Guard Field Gun Crew
Winter Guard Mortar Crew
I’m not sure you would see this pairing as Khador may want more shooting which could be anyone of Vlad2, Irusk1, Butcher3, Strak. The faction is a bit up in the air after the themes have landed and I’m sure we’ll see a few mainstays emerge over the next few months.
Cryx had a large drop from Mk2/3 however don’t count them out. They have some scary builds and their new theme force is a real example of the undead horde being revived.
Satyxis Raiders + UA
Bane Warriors (min)
Wrongeye + Snapjaw
Raiders + UA
Denny1 has loads of builds and this is just one example of something that you can run. She de-buffs your army which means she is the ultimate mat/rat fixer – She can swing armour so hard between crippling grasp/parasite and feat.
Honourable mentions to Scaverous, Gaspy2/3
Ret are possibly one of the most balanced factions in the game – building to play against Ret is really hard. They have a lot of really viable casters and builds. One of the new kids on the block is pacific rim (in theme):
Helynna – FoW theme
So 3 colossals. Wow. It has a lot of control with the pushes, a potential 20″ threat between tramples, reach and triple push, anti shooting between shield guard/decel etc, and a load of armour/boxes. Eeesh!
Other pairing options include Issyria/Rahn and Kae.
Arcanist Mechaniks x 2
Dawnguard Invictors + UA
Vyros Jack Spam is also still a thing. Lots to think about!
Convergence always seems somewhat at the mercy of the meta. They have a limited faction so they either have the tools or they don’t. Some of the lists they can bring to bare are pretty scary though:
– Assimilator x 3
All the servitors
Algorithmic dispersion optifex
Jacks/Axiom to taste
Tep x 2
Mercs are in a good place right now and have one of the scariest lists in the game in Ossrum/Gunn Bunnies:
8 x Gunners
Horenhold Artillery x 2
(More jack/heavy version)
Driller x 3
Basher x 2
Horenhold Artillery x 2
The list has a number of variants from the one above to ones including more heavies/blasters. Definitely one to think about.
Pairings can vary depending on player and wether it is 2/3 list. Lists popping up a lot:
Drake has been showing up a lot in tournaments recently:
– Boomhowlers Min
Magnus2 (Kingmaker) – Great scenario list however has been toned back since power attacks can’t be done to friendlies any more. I’m not sure on list builds for this but it usually has Boomies ambushing, kell, orin and another solo free with theme, a collosal of some sort and then fillers.
Thexus and all the dudes is also doing the rounds but you are more likely to see this in 3 list and if nemo3 remains a thing then it may keep this guy out the meta for a little while.
Legion is expected to change massively with some of their new releases and recent tournament results. I would definitely be looking at:
– Bolt Thrower
Honourable mention to Vayl2 and Thags1. Vayl2 doesn’t have her top of 1 assassination anymore but can still spell sling the best of the game to death. I feel she competes in the same space as L3 for a spot in the pair. Thags1 is a monster and can be teched to deal with some real bogey men in the meta.
I haven’t seen a huge amount of Trolls about. The ones I have seen seem to be Ragnor/X.
Chef x 2
Krielstone + UA
Fire Eaters x 2
I think this is being seen with Calandra most, but Grissel2 is solid. Horgle2 and some of the Doomshapers are still scary to face as well.
So they nerfed WW and Una. WW is still boss, Una not so much. With the rise of storm division, then Krueger 2 is getting ready for a comeback and Tanith is till knocking around. Depending on what the Cygnar drop is will dictate to some extent the WW build. If it’s a cygnar list then Woldwyrds are going to show up a lot:
Woldwyrd x 2
Sentry stone x 2
Bone grinders min
I’m seeing builds with Loki in as well in stead of the Feral. Pureblood and Wyrds are pretty mandatory while lances/H3 are around.
Pairings can be varied but the one that I think you need to consider is the double monkeys:
Woldwrath x 2
This thing an heal 15 points per turn, can be armour 23 any turn it wants and has denial with the rock wall etc. It’s tough
No idea yet!
They are still settling and I haven’t seen what they can do yet. Lots of casters with potential
Mak2 is one to watch. Her KitKat list is pretty horrible to deal with:
It has a lot of tough, no knockdown, def13, dodging Ferox which can then stay death. It can’t play into massive armour but is an attritional monster and can assassinate really well.
The other list is Rasheth – I’m trying to get details as I haven’t played it yet but I’ve heard it is legit!
I don’t have a huge amount of experience into Minions (may bribe one of the team to do a write up … Adam… Ahem)
From what I have seen:
Rask + Not Rask
