Round 3 saw me up against a player from last years WTC team the England Lions with a faction i was hoping to dodge! Golly, with his Grymkin. He was running Dreamer DM and Old Witch DM. I knew I was getting Dreamer and had to drop Kaya as Morv has no feat into DM and i don’t have the hitting power to wear him down with just one army. As expected he did indeed drop dreamer.
-Skin and Moans
-Skin and Moans
Golly wins the roll off and takes first turn. I pick the side with the forest and the trench. Golly deploys in the standard kin brick with hounds and swarms on the flanks. I deploy my wolves central and my birds on the flanks with a wayfarer on each flank.
Grymkin Turn 1
Everything runs up. Mirage goes on a skin & moans and he throws out an artifice of deviation incase it matters.
(Forgot a pic here)
Circle Turn 1
I run up as far as i can. Staying out of his heavy hitters threat ranges. I know he can absyal gate but all my important pieces are out of range of it. Kaya casts synergy as fog isn’t super useful here and having my order of activation eased for next turn feels more important than fog.
Grymkin Turn 2
Golly runs a cage rager and tries to abysal gate my razorwing as it doesn’t have stealth. He rolls snake eyes to hit and boosts with future sight but still misses. He then casts it again and hard rolls the 8, needing anything but to land the port and fortunately for me he rolls exactly that. Recovering well from the awful dice luck he positions into the zones his ragers leading the charge with his miraged S&M pressuring where i can position on the right.
Circle Turn 2
I can get two birds onto his cage rager so go for it. On the right i give two birds wraithbane and they go in on the gremlin swarms and a crabbit, killing all 3 and giving me 2 pips. Kaya moves round and feats and then the razorwing gets the final pip and repo’s out of threat. I primal my birds and send them in. They do good damage to it but don’t kill it in the end, leaving it on less than 10 boxes. I position my stalker out of threat but in the zone ready.
I score my flag!
1 – 0 to Circle
Grymkin Turn 3
Dreamer casts manifest destiny and walks onto the flag. A Gorehound walks up and drags my razorwing out of feat range. The skin and moans then walks up and blends them both. He makes a pumpkin that contests my flag. His two cage ragers boost headbuts into my two griffons on the right that both hit, then both griffons die.
Golly Score his flag!
1 – 1
Circle Turn 3
My razorwing finishes the last few boxes on the wounded rager then repo’s to contest the flag. My feral kills the contesting pumpkin. My wayfarer lands a hunters mark onto the gorehound. My scarsfel charges and kills it and then my stalker puts lightning strike on himself, charges and kills the S&M and then gets out of range with a sprint. Lord of the feast hits the gremlin swarm but then doesn’t kill it.
I score my Flag
2 – 1 to Circle
Grymkin turn 4
Golly has a really unfortunate turn of frenzy checks. One of the hounds frenzys and does some damage to the other. One Rager frenzys onto the objective doing 8 damage and the other rager frenzys onto my bird doing a bit of damage. His other gorehound activates and with the crabbit kills off the Razorwing. The Skin and moans then charges and kills the pureblood who gets turned into a mouse to contest my flag.
Golly scores his flag
2 – 2
Circle Turn 4
Time is getting a little low and i think my play really suffers for it. I can get my feral onto his S&M with a hunters mark and his rager has no corpses on it. My scarsfel builds a synergy pip on the rager. Kaya builds another by killing the mouse then the feral goes in on the S&M. I severely over estimated how tanky his beasts where and so i primalled the stalker. The stalker then goes in and kills them both off with his initials plus 1 bought attack then sprints up to the top. Lord of the feast continues to not kill a gremlin swarm. I port a stone to contest his flag and set the others up for the following turns.
I score 2!
4 – 2 to Circle
Grymkin Turn 5
One gorehound kills the contesting stone and the lord of the fail. The cage rager mirages around and Dreamer arcs an abysal gate at the Feral hitting it and bringing it round into charge range. The rager and the hound then charge and kill it and a stone. A pumpkin is made and goes to be the frenzy target for the stalker instead of the knell which moves to contest my zone. A mouse contests my flag.
Golly scores his flag
4 – 3 to Circle
Circle Turn 5
With the stalker out of commision i can’t kill his rager this turn so it’s operation stay the fuck out the way. I send Kaya and the scarsefel into the Death knell doing a bit of damage. Another stone contests his flag and my wayfarer backs off to within 4 so he’s harder to kill but can contest my flag incase golly tries to score it.
4 – 3 to Circle
Grymkin Turn 6
Both my stones in his zone go down to his hound and crabbit. The Rager tramples over my other stones into the objective and buys attacks. He doesn’t kill the stones but does solid damage to the objective. The other gorehound kills off both of my stones. The mouse runs to my flag but he thankfully can’t clear my wayfarer.
Golly Scores his flag and the left zone
5 – 4 to Grymkin
Circle Turn 6
My goal this turn was to use Kaya and the griffon to finish the knell as it was beaten up to then allow the stalker to charge and kill the rager and then sprint into a position where dreamer needed to get way out of the way. Unfortunatley Kaya and the bird don’t kill the cart so the stalker needs to do it so i can at least score one. My wayfarer goes to my flag and sprays down his mouse.
I don’t manage to contest so i score my zone and Golly scores his zone and flag.
7 – 5 to Grymkin
Grymkin Turn 7
Golly needs to kill my objective and my wayfarer. Contest my zone and score my flag and he wins. He has more than enough models to do so without breaking a sweat and that’s that!
Final Score: 11 – 5 to Grymkin
Dang. I felt quite in that game up until the turn i primaled the stalker. That was the first mistake that sent the game on a downward spiral as with so few models left, having that extra activation was essential. My turn after that was also very poor. I’d have been better off running my scarsfel to contest his flag and zone, killing the knell with the stalker and then i could even have sent kaya after the objective which if i’d killed i would have made it 6 – 5 to me. His cage rager would have been in a location that it couldn’t contribute and dreamer would have been in trouble. I think i messed up so bad due to being pressured on clock. If i’d played quicker i think i might have thought it through more and could have maybe taken how the win. But, coulda, woulda, shoulda. I didn’t and Golly played it fantastically so good game!
