Game 12 – Morty vs Damiano (Game 5 B&O)
We had 2 games today so with my chances of doing well and a dicey looking SOS I decided to just drop Morty and get a feel for him.
Game 5 was vs Mark Duxbury playing Mercs. It was in the irregulars theme – not entirely ure on the list but I think it was something like:
- Buckaneer (net knockdown guy)
- Thresher heavy
Stannis (on the horse)
Idrians + UA
I played the same Morty list (see Rick and Morty post)
I won first due to theme and off we went:
The right hand zone has a lot of terrain to help on the approach (hill, forest). I can hide my BG and caster behind the forest and threaten the zone with host of shadows so I stacked the right and left the infantry to hold the left zone.
Mark matched the Idrians up against the Kats (who were preyed), nyss vs swordsmen and jacks pretty central with Rauluk and co on a flank. Pretty good deployment – Idrians with prey and CRA can punch through the defense on the kats and a sure footed unit of nyss are tricky to deal with for the swordsmen.
I run to outside of threat and hide a few kats behind the forest to threaten Rauluk and get all in the Idrians grill. BG central, hollow on swordsmen.
Mark finds a cheeky line to the kats with the Idrians. Deadeye goes up on the Idrians, sure foot on the nyss, everything tries to position out of threat range where possible and one of the Kats goes down.
Plan here is to set up scenario pressure/collapse the right flank, be a pain on the left and contest the middle.
Swordsmen get +2 from Tycom and run to engage/threat the zone. Eilish runs but is out of position for next turn, cetrati brick up in the middle under krea arua, morty brings back a kat and the kats clear most of the Idrians. I was worried about losing the unit and with hollowup chose to keep one back as I didn’t feel I needed the point this turn – I think I probably could have scored this turn safely. Despolier and Rhadeim hang out in the back of the central zone but hidden by the forest.
Mark clears out 2 of the cetrati and half the swordsmen and clears all but one of the Kats (glad I left him back now!). Everything is contested.
Time for Morty to go into the grind. With fury from hollow, all the Kats come back, Morty safeguards and feats. Despoliler gets enraged and freecharged and finds a glorious spot in range of the jack and also 5” of a nyss. Between the freecharge and 4 extra attacks the jack goes down. Rhadeim goes and pounces into the back arc of a nyss to create a void spirit and kills another for good measure. Swordsmen do some work swinging needing 9’s with 2 attacks each but my misplacement really costs me. The void spirit walks over to A and H – eats both of them then transports into the Idrians and goes full pacman J . The cetrati charge the second jack and put a decent chuck of damage on it. One of the kats chips in and the rest all chill out ready for next turn. I score the central zone
Mark can’t do a lot on feat and just flails/gets pushed about.
I clear the right and central zones, finally strip surefoot on the left zone and go to 4-0 Mark cant score or contest so we call it there.
Loving Morty – such an attrition beast and certainly when combined with the MOW theme and the quality infantry that skorne has I think he is really powerful. In this game being able to hold the feat despite knowing I would take losses was back breaking for Mark – bringing models back, taking chunks out of his army with very limited retaliation was great.
