First round of the day saw me up against a Southport local Gary with his Trolls. His pair was Madrak 1 in Band of Hero’s and Kolgrimma in Storm of the North. Although i wanted to play as much Morvhanna 2 as possible i couldn’t risk army wide take down into her so went with the safe drop of Kruger who could play into either list just fine.

*Something to note. I consistently forgot to take pictures after my opponents turn so a lot of them will be after the full round until near the end. Apologies!*
I won the roll off and decided to go second as i thought this could be a turn 7 game so first and last to score felt important. I picked the side with more defensive terrain and we got going. My opponent deployed Madrak, his two heavies and Krielstone centrally, his fenblades on my right flank and champions on my left. I deployed my three wyrds opposite his champions to hopefully take a few down before they got to me two of my wardens were slightly off to my left flank so they could take cover behind the central cloud and my third warden and guardian positioned on my right. A sentry stone took position on each flank with my two nodes central ready to make use of the concealment available and project threat across the board.
Trolls Turn 1:
My opponent runs up his forces, dumping Madraks entire stack into his Krielstone to project a large armour bubble. The fenblades fan out to cover a lot of the board and bait vengeance, the champs run up with 3 moving up aggressively and 2, along with skaldi and the sorceror staying back behind the cloud.
Circle Turn 1:
I knew i could take a decent lead without giving away much, Kruger started and arced a boosted rebuke at the fens through the right most arc node but missed and had to do it again. The node then placed back to safety in the forest. My three wyrds moved up, wanting to take advantage of even ground not being up and killed off all three of the leading champs as well as drizzling a few wounds over onto the rest of them through a few sanguine bond points. Two of my wardens trampled up and popped animi to make a forest wall for the 1 camp Kruger to chill behind. The guardian relaxed at the back and my manikins dropped a couple of fens.
Trolls Turn 2:
Not being able to counter punch my forces my opponent decided instead to push up into the zones with what he could. The warders moved into the left, his two beasts and madrak in the centre with the Krielstone bunched up behind and the fens moving into the right and centre zone. Madrak threw his axe at a warden doing decent damage and then ricochet’d into Kruger landing the hit and boosting the damage making me pass off about 7 or 8 damage to the guardian. He then feated and passed it over.
Circle Turn 2:
I wanted to make a big scenario push as there wasn’t a huge amount in the zones. My plan was to use my feat and TK to clear the Circle zone of his heavies and the right hand zone of a few fens and then pick off the remaining few and his objective with guns and spells to score 4 in a turn. It didn’t quite go to plan however and i ended up leaving 1 toughed, knocked down fenblade in the right zone and the objective alive on 3 boxes in the left so i only scored the circle. I did however clear out all three warders and even more fens thanks to entropic aura.
Trolls Turn 3:
My opponent again filled up the zones as much as he could. Clearing some minikins and one of my shifting stones with his fens as well as putting two damage into my objective. The champs clear out one of my Nodes and the bomber puts some damage into the warden.
1 – 0 to Circle
Circle Turn 3:
Between my three wyrds, some manikin and shaper sprays, and a warden getting to combat i was able to finish off the objective and all of the remaining champs apart from the sorcerer who wasn’t in the zone. My manikins and a warden cleared the right hand zone through a combo of sprays, punches and TKs and my guardian got stone strength and charged his bomber doing a whole bunch of damage (Can just about see his grid in the picture.
Trolls Turn 4:
My opponent kind of knew he wasn’t really able to come back from being 4 down with all of his heavy hitters removed or nullified so went for an assassination. He wanted to run the bomber and try to jackhammer Kruger to death but wasn’t able to thanks to the guardian crippling it’s body and spirit so had to activate Madrak first. He healed it up and charged the Guardian with Madrak who killed it as it was already banged up from the transfer early game. The bomber then walks up and throws out two bombs needing hard 10s (it had 1 on it already and then had to put up snipe thanks to windstorm so couldn’t afford to boost. He landed one of the two but it wasn’t enough and i scored again at the end of his turn to go 5 clear.
I think my opponent needed to be a little more aggressive on turn 1 and get further up the board. I also think he should have put up even ground turn 1 as it would have stopped me clearing as many champs as early on as i did. Still, being able to shut down the fenblades so hard with rebuke made it a tricky match up for my opponent to deal with as i could keep him at arms length by shutting down his faster unit.
Game 1 down and off to a good start!
