So there’s a new contender in town!
Big Boi Barnabas2 arrived recently and quickly got thrown together in anticipation of smashing him down for some table time!
One thing first though that slightly dulled my excitement… I don’t know if I am in the minority but that model was a PIG to put together (no offense, Farrow bro’s); the skull heap was heavily warped, his legs didn’t match up to their slots, his 2 jaw pieces wouldn’t line up… he’s basically held together with threats and prayers.
However, he’s MASSIVE! (see 100% accurate scientific diagram below)
After some research/list stealing online, I rocked up to my game with the following list –
Barny2, Soul Slave, 2 Wrastlers, 2 Boneswarms, Wrongeye & Snapjaw, Dahlia & Skarath, Eilish, Witch Doc, max Bone Grinders, 2 Boil Master & Spirit Cauldrons (proxied by Spitters and bokors) (Will Work For Food theme)
I’m facing Ste and his Trolls. He’s been rocking Madrak and Kolgrima recently so I was expecting one of those, but he dropped a surprise –
Jarl, Runebearer, Rok, Earthborn, Valka, Min Kriel Stone and Northkin Elder, 2 Bear Handlers, Fire Eaters, Max Champs & Skaldi, Max Longriders (Storm of the North theme)
I win first turn and deployment looks like this –
Paul is an aspiring hand model, and insists on leaving his aesthetically pleasing digits up to 12 inches onto the board, denying any flanking maneuvers on the right side.
First turn with WWFF is great. Everything bombs forwards as far as it can, and then I start asking questions about threat ranges because Quicken and the stone giving out more SPD is apparently a thing… As such the right flank backs up significantly because those bears can MOVE but the left flank sits a hair out of Longrider threat. Fury is generated, Barny puts up Onslaught, Blackest Night and Swarm, the other Lesser warlocks cast whatever they need to and the Pots only generate a corpse each, one going to Barny and one going to the left side Boneswarm.
Ste responds and shows me the power of cloud denial. Moses gives Jarl Magic Bullet, and then Jarl puts Quicken on the Champs, Tac Supremacy on himself, dumps one in the stone and wings the left Boneswarm with a pair of shots to knock out it’s mind, with the Magic Bullet doing nothing to the Wrastler. He then feats for a crap-load of clouds and puts them in a big line across the middle, joining them with the fog, house and forest to create a big LoS blocking problem. Everything else runs up behind the clouds, with the Fire Eaters heading wide on the right. Valka sits on his flag (the 2 nearest 4 inch aoes to Ste are snowdrifts granted by his theme) and the stone makes some more fury and plods up too.
I CAN’T SEE ANYTHING!
I decide to take what I can and only give away the minimum in terms of models and scenario points. Skarath gets Rage’d by the Wrastler and walks through the fog to kill 2 Longriders and paralyse another. The left Boneswarm uses his corpse to heal, puts up it’s animus and positions to deter Ste’s heavies coming in on my Wrastler. Barny advances to a position to catch as much of both flanks as possible for Blackest Night and puts up Swarm again (trying to tempt in one of his heavies, as Ste can only get one in on him, but Barny is Def 17 with 3 transfers). The Pots top off Barny with corpses and put 2 on the right side Boneswarm who puts up Swarm as well and toes the zone. Everything else positions to avoid as much retaliation as possible.
Ste responds by shoving Trolls down my throat to solidify his currently strong-looking scenario game. The ambushing bears come on the right flank and run to threaten my support next turn. The Longriders get a bullrush order (a what?) and manage to hit the high numbers required to slam Skarath over Dahlia (it was something that an unboosted 9 followed by a 4+ on 1 dice for distance). Luckily she had transfers so she lived and he couldn’t follow up the kill as she had her “f*ck you living models” spell up. Their remaining attacks miss on the Boneswarm and Skarath. Ste wisely holds back his heavies, positioning the Earthborn to benefit from the building with Rok further back. The stone gets more fury and pops for ARM and STR for warriors and positions aggressively behind the building. I can’t tell you what Jarl does this turn but its not much and involves retreating like a biiiiitch. On my right the Champs charge in, 3 demolishing my Objective and 2 going for the Boneswarm. Between being effectively DEF 17 and in Starcrossed too, the Champs land nothing. The Fire Eaters position outside of my debuffs and spray him for some damage and fire. The Bears on the right hang back. Score is 0-2 in Ste’s favour.
Turns out attack debuffs and Starcrossed really help! Didn’t lose a single model!
Hatch a plan to kill both heavies and get in the scenario game. Boneswarm on the left frenzies to no effect. Skarath only kills the Longrider he can reach on the far left. The Croc Doc gives one of the Bone Shakers Ghostly, followed by Barny giving the Press Forward order. He charges the Earthborn and the nearest Longrider, with a Boneshaker running to engage the earthborn and Rok. Barny kills the Longrider and Earthborn EVENTUALLY (seriously averaged like 4 on 2 dice) after popping feat and eating all the Grinders and one Boil Master. He hits Rok with a boosted Hunter’s Mark, allowing the Wrastler to Rage himself and kill Rok. Numerous mistakes here; should have fired the Hunter’s Mark off before the Shaker ran to engage so didn’t have to boost, which would have allowed Barny to Rage the Wrastler, thus saving fury for the Wrastler to Overtake through the Stone unit possibly. Which he shouldn’t have done anyway, he should have Overtake’d towards Ste’s flag. I’m an idiot.
Snapjaw tramples to get to the last Longrider on the left and kills him and Wrongeye does his Starcrossed thing. The right Wrastler forces to full to kill one Champ and spread some damage around and the other Boneswarm flails, buying attacks instead of just putting up Swarm. Soul Slave illegally lands Rebuke on the ambush Bears (it’s an upkeep, naughty naughty). Scores go to 1-3 in Ste’s favour.
I’ve dun goofed here and Ste knows it. He needs 3 points to win and they’re easily attainable.
Valka finally realises the benefit to sitting on the flag but also being in the zone. Jarl put’s quicken on the Runebearer which, combined with the stone’s SPD benefit, will allow it to run onto my flag, and then sits himself in the zone. The Champs mostly fail against the Wrastler and don’t manage to quite finish off the Boneswarm on the right, prompting the Bears to charge in and handily finish it off. Unfortunately in doing so he’s placed the Handler in the run line of the Runebearer (it was able to make it to the flag in a straight line by millimeters), so he can’t finish out the game this turn. He forgets to activate the Fire Eaters and Rebuke’d Bears. Scores go to 1-5 to Ste.
To be honest, I have no right still being in this game. One small positioning error cost Ste the win last turn and now that his heavies are gone Barny can start bullying the table.
My left side Wrastler frenzies onto a Shaker, killing it. A Skarath spray and a charging Boneswarm kill Valka and allows Dahlia to run onto the enemy flag. Wrongeye backs up a bit and joins Snapjaw, putting up Starcrossed. Barny advances through the building after receiving Ghostly from the Doc and kills off a champ and Skaldi (putting out enough damage that Sanguine Bond can’t help) and puts up his usual defensive spells. The remaining Boil Master shows he’s not useless and one-shot’s a champ without the charging bonus (dem dice). The Wrastler then moves past the remaining engaging champ (freestrike missing thanks to Blackest Night and Starcrossed) and Overtakes his way through the entire Bear unit in the zone. Scores now 3-5 in Ste’s favour.
With the scenario scores creeping away from Ste and his forces dwindling, he needs to kill the Wrastler in the zone to try to score some points or assassinate. Ste goes for the assassination. After he lands every possible attack he can muster, he’s left with Jarl’s 2 shots and I’ve still got 2 transfers and a fully healthy Wrastler to transfer to, so he concedes.
No excuses here, I got lucky. The game was in Ste’s palm and one little mistake on his part turned it. That Jarl list is horribly quick but a lack of an accuracy fixer was just what Barny2 likes to see with the -4 attack roll swing with Starcrossed on top (to really show how effective it was, the only model Ste killed of mine all game was a single Boneswarm!)
Moving forwards, Eilish and the Soul Slave can probably get replaced; the slave upkept Onslaught all game even though it wasn’t needed and Eilish was a walking Puppet Master applicator, which is what the Pots were doing anyway. Going to try Barny2 in Blindwater with Shamblers for feat tokens, see how well DEF 16 Posse hold up.
Till next time!
