Here at Team Inverted HQ (which isn’t just me, honest, people just don’t write sh*t anymore and our Retri player has his own blog…), we share a friendly rivalry with another North West gaming club; the Merseyside Mammoths. This weekend, while the majority of our players were at Bonescon, 2 of us headed oop North to Southport to beat those ruffians to within an inch of their lives!
I took all my minion models but knew I was only running Maelok all day;
Maelok, Soul Slave, Wrastler, Blindwalker, Bull Snapper, 2 Witch Docs, Bone Shrine, Totem Hunter, 3 Max Posse (2 with Void Leeches), Max Croaks
First game is against Mark Williams and his pink Legion!
Saeryn1, Succubus, Naga, 2 Carnivean, Bloodseer, 2 Thrones, Ice Witches, 2 Spell Martyrs, Mist Speaker, Forsaken (and a Hellion that wasn’t deployed) in Oracles theme.
Deployment looks like –
I win first turn and gladly take it. Usual stuff, everything runs up but stays outside of Throne throwing spine bursts range. Totem hunter flanks wide, his Prey on a spell martyr.
Mark runs up as well. He considers hanging back but the Croaks threaten further than he can escape so he takes it on the chin. Carniveans hang outside of threat with Spiny Growths up, Banishing ward on one, Respawn on the other, and Saeryn throws out an optimistic Blight Bringer (having a spell called the same as a gargantuan, not confusing at all) which doesn’t scatter onto my Wrastler and otherwise does nothing. Prey’d spell martyr books it round the back of his lines.
I want to kill a throne this turn. I activate my Blindwalker, who has to trample across a Croak to get in range of the right hand Throne, then Maelok pops feat, casts Death Pact and successfully arcs a Mortality onto the Throne. The Croaks and one Posse member who could charge it leave it on 4 boxes after some dire rolls (4 Croaks in a row rolled 0 damage on boosted dice – 7). Everything runs to jam, with my Boneshrine on my flag and my Snapper in my zone ready to start scoring.
To add insult to injury the fire on the Throne goes out 🙁
Mark gets a surprising amount of work done under my feat! The Thrones, Carniveans and Bloodseer kill all bar 3 of the Croaks as well as 3 Posse members, with a smattering of wounds spread out on some more. Saeryn feats (possibly should have done that last turn) and with the Bloodseer toe’ing the middle zone the score goes to 2-0 in my favour.
We talk it out; the Blindwalker can walk up to the Bloodseer and throw him out the zone and I win immediately. Even if he fails, I still jam everything and go to 4-0 and he can’t stop both my zone and flag in his turn anyway s we shake hands!
Short and sweet. Mark was a Hellion down which could have bought him a turn by flying into my backfield to deny scoring, but he said himself the writing was on the wall at that point.
Next up is Gary Stewart and his Trolls! He’s brought Madrak1 which I’ve been DESPERATE to play against with Maelok so I’m looking forward to this!
Madrak1, Runebearer, Mauler, Earthborn, Fellcaller, Horthol, Chronicler, Max Stone and Elder, Max Champs and Skaldi, Max Fennblades and UA, Min Longriders, Gobber Crew, Chef
Forgot deployment, check the pic below and imagine all my stuff 11 inches further back…
I got first turn and in a shocking turn of events put out my spells and ran up! Hunter prey’d the Champs. I go as far forward as I can to be able to threaten the other side of the zones so either he comes in to stop me gaining more ground and takes Gators to the face, or he gives up the scenario.
Gary, being a manly man, laughs off my attempts to scare him out of scenario and runs at me. His fennblades (with the concealment from the Chronicler) and Earthborn scream into the left zone and the Longriders toe the right. The Champs reposition behind the Fennblades to avoid the attentions of the Totem Hunter and Madrak gets everyone in his control and casts Even Ground.
Scenario looks good on the right, left seems like a case of hold the line…
Blindwalker shuffles up to get range on the Longriders, Maelok Feats, Death Pacts and lands the boosted Mortality on the ‘Riders, takes one off the Shrine just in case and doesn’t get cursed. Both right units of Posse pray for Rerolls and charge the ‘Riders, managing to take them out through weight of attacks and nabbing Maelok a soul. The Croaks all aim, fish for 8s, and kill whatever Fenns they can reach, which combined with a charging Posse amounts to 6 of them. Totem Hunter keeps flanking…
Plenty of targets for Gary this turn, but as it’s my feat turn the Gators are a little tough…
He starts off with his remaining Longrider and Horthol doing what they can against the far right Posse, leaving one on 1 box and two on 2 boxes but not killing any. Madrak manages to straight up kill a green Posse member and ricochet into the void leech, Blood Boon’ing Even Ground. With the newly opened up space the Mauler kills two more by putting Rage on himself and forcing to full. The Earthborn and charging Fenns (with Hero’s Tragedy) bounce off the left side Posse, with the Champs crowding in behind them and the Chef running to engage the Hunter. The Stone unit and Gobber crew crowd in around Madrak. I’ve got my flag so it’s 1-0 to me.
Keep up the jam. Keep up the scenario.
Blindwalker walks up to the Mauler (making the range thanks to Death Ride) and throws him out of the zone, putting up his animus afterwards. Unfortunately without the help of Mortality the 5 Posse on the right can’t kill the single longrider in the zone (wasn’t even close, only did about 4 damage to him), so no zone for me this turn. Maelok Death Pacts, puts Mortality on the Stone unit and chills. The unit decimated by the Mauler last turn walk up and eat 2 stone dudes and a gobber, sending all the souls to Maelok. Croaks split up to throw at the Fellcaller (all miss) and the stone unit (kill 2) as well as setting his objective on fire and doing 5 points to it. The left side Posse manage to miss every attack bar one on the Fennbades, which has the silver lining of meaning only one of them gets KD. Hunter unsurprisingly kills the Chef and sprints further behind the troll lines. Still got my flag, 2-0.
Gary’s turn starts unfortunately with the Earthborn frenzying for no effect. The Rider and Horthol manage to kill one croc on the far right, and the Mauler moves around to kill one more green Posse member and toe the zone. The champs get the charge they’ve been waiting for and get stuck into my left side Posse (after the Fennblades move out of the way, dying to free strikes), killing them all EXCEPT the one contesting his flag. Gary calls it at this point; I go to 3-0 at the end of this turn and the right side is collapsing, as I likely kill the one contesting Rider (who doesn’t have stone armour next turn) and throw the Mauler out again and win 5-0.
(Jonny owes you all digs, suckas)
Good game, not at all the straightforward Maelok advantage I was expecting!
Final game and it’s Glen and his brand new Cryx!
Terminus, Barathrum, 2 arc nodes, 3 Min Revenants with 3 Rifles each, min Blackbanes, Agrimony, Ghost Caine, Wraith Engine, Cannon, Rengrave
We both run forwards, pic below is after my turn 1. Amusingly Glen won the roll, and decided he wanted my side AND to go first. After carefully explaining that’s not how it works, he takes first and I take the side he wanted… Also we laugh for a good 10 minutes about spooky ghosts and get some weird looks. I blame the lunchtime pints.
Rifles and pistols take a toll on my Croaks, killing half of them, and then Blackbanes jam in on the left. The Wraith Engine, realising he’s functionally immortal, jams in on my right to deny my flag forever, and elsewhere smatterings of damage are put on random Posse from random shots.
It dawns on me what a rough match up this actually is for me. On Glens side, he has basically no feat, no way to buff his unit numbers and no way to make Machine Wraiths either. However, I have no way to snack away the bits of damage he’s doing, no way to get souls on Maelok for multiple Mortalities and worst of all, virtually no magic weapons. This means the Blackbanes and Wraith Engine are untouchable and are currently denying both zones and my flag. I decide to send in the Wrastler to kill his objective and hope to stall out till turn 7 on 1 CP because I don’t have a better option!
Blindwalker moves up and pops animus, Maelok feats, Death Pacts and shoots a venom over Blackbane and Agrimony, boosting nothing and leaving Agrimony on 1 box (sigh). Wrastler goes through the building and destroys the objective and a revenant. Everything charges into the jaws of the Cryx army, killing random pirates and jamming. 1-0 to me!
Glen jumps on my error in leaving my objective largely unprotected (should have venom’d them instead), and 4 Blackbanes charge in and destroy it (only slightly above average rolls). Terminus and Barathrum kill my Wrastler and literally nothing else happens. Pirates bounce off Posse, that’s it… Wraith Engine continues to stare incorporeal-y at my flag, and is joined by spooky Caine too in case there weren’t enough ghosts sitting around my stuff.
OK, so the CP plan isn’t going to work. BUT Glen has left Terminus on only 2 focus and I doubt I’ll get another shot at him.
I clear out most of the blocking pirates but miss the key boosted 7 to hit Terminus with Mortality… The Posse go in anyway and leave him on 8 boxes and a focus still and I shake Glen’s hand.
Running the numbers, its over 90% to hit a boosted 7, and that makes it an over 75% chance to kill Terminus, so it was definitely the right play as eventually his army grinds mine down and Maelok can’t run from Terminus forever!
Top games with top blokes. Also the other Inverted player won all three of his games so Mammoths are officially our bitches now.
Till next time!
