The final saw me up against a local club mate of mine. Ben Thomas, Ben is a very good player and although i’ve beaten him before i have never done so in an event and i knew one of his lists was tailored as an experimental Circle drop. Needless to say, i was nervous! Ben was running Issy in legions and Goreshade 4 in defenders with a million infantry. I knew he wouldn’t drop 4shade into the bird and Tharn and i was concerned about my ability to relevantly threaten his Issy list with Kruger thanks to spell hate, absurd threat ranges and huge bases. As expected he dropped Issy and I dropped Morv.

I was hoping to win the roll off as i know with TK wave and Crusaders call impy threatens 15 inches so getting into the zones before he can threaten them would have been huge. Unfortunately though, he did win the roll off thanks to +1 and took first turn. I debated taking the side with the forest but there was a nice building with a perfect contesting spot in the right zone to abuse so i took the side with the building. Ben deploys a trident on each flank, his battlegroup central, sentinels on my left and destors on my right. I put my raptor central ready to threaten whichever tridents gets fruity first. Riders on the left and double ravagers on the right.
Ret Turn 1:
Ben runs up as far as he can without walking into my threat. Admonition goes on the Pheonix and Inviolable Resolve on the Sentinels.
Circle Turn 1:
I move up cautiously. I know i can’t give him a full alpha as he can and will wipe huge swathes of my army under the feat. As normal i move a ravager from each unit up aggressively and keep the rest back behind cover or into places that he’d need to come forward for. Carnivore goes on lord of the feast and fog of war is cast. Lord of the feast runs to behind a building ready to threaten the board and my riders move up, staying out of range for the trident to advance and shoot them through stealth.
Ret Turn 2:
I thought i’d positioned well but totally neglected the Pheonix which was placed with a TK wave to get a charge lane on the rider by the building getting into reach range of the lord of the feast, killing him off with the sword. Everything else fanned out, contesting and threatening zones. He doesn’t trigger vengeance on anything and passes the clock.
Circle Turn 2:
Losing the lord of the feast sucks but i know i can at least clear the pheonix. I use jump to get around admonition and then between 4 of them with re rolls, they were able to bring it down. They then repo to try and stay safe, or be annoying. I get one charge onto the trident doing good damage and then run another from the other unit in to engage to ensure double vengeance if he wants to do stuff with his trident. Another moves across into the middle zone to add another contesting model and the bird puts a few shots out at what it can.
Ret Turn 3:
Ben has a disgusting turn here. He feats, put admonition on imp, casts crusaders call and velocities to get in the circle zone on the left. The trident and sentinels manage to clear out all 4 remaining riders the destors unjam the trident who then shoots a couple of ravagers off the board and a couple of the sentinels kill my objective. He scores 3.
3 – 0 to Ret
Circle Turn 3:
Well that was rough. Most of what i have left is way out of threat of everything and i’m down on scenario with no real grasp on the left zone. However, Issy is on 0 camp and within 14 inches of my Storm Raptor. I need to kill one Sentinel with Inviolable Resolve to clear the tinyest of lines to Issyria for the bird and also stay out of 6 of Imperatus so he doesn’t admonition to block LoS. My wolf rider champion advances and jumps and manages to kill the sentinel with her ranged spear and then repo’s out the way. Morv Charges a sentinel below the house and casts skyfire getting within 10 but outside of 6 of impy. The bird then advances round and puts two shots into her. Landing the first boosted 10 and killing her off with the second shot.
A bloody rough game. This Issy list is really tricky to play into, getting the balance of putting enough in threat to be relevant without losing your army is a tough one to get right and I certainly didn’t nail it here. I was possibly too cagey and it cost me on scenario however putting too much up too far is just going to get things killed against Issy. Going second meant the bird couldn’t really engage properly without getting Imped so it would be interesting to see how the game goes if i win the roll off. I think i got quite lucky to find the line to Issy as it was so very nearly impossible for me to achieve. With more reps into the list though i feel like it’s playable, just very tough.
