Round 3 saw me up against Chris Young a local from my club and the first person i ever played on my journey into competitive Warmachine so i was happy to get a game into him.
He had Skare 3 in Slaughter Fleet and his patented Hateful 8 Scavvy Black industries list. I’d played into Skare 3 recently and knew it was a match up Morv could handle and although i didn’t really know what Scavvys list did i thought i’d be able to manage a jack brick. So i dropped Morv and he dropped Scavvy.
Morvhanna the Dawnshadow
Wolf Rider Champion
Lord of the Feast
Tharn Ravager Shaman
Tharn Ravager Shaman
Tharn Wolf Riders
Lord Exhumator Scaverous
-Kharybdis (Or however it’s spelt)
Sea Dog Deck Gun
(One of the nodes might have been on Denny? I’m not sure)
I finally lost the roll off and Chris took first turn. Neither side looked overly advantaged so i picked the side with a forest. Chris Deployed in a long line of jacks with Karibbillywibbilly on the right flank with Aikos and DJ, nightmare and Denny on the left, nightmare preys the lord of the feast. I deployed my riders and raptor on the left and doubled up my ravagers on the right to try and punch through a flank.
Cryx Turn 1
Nothing much to note. Everything runs up with a node on each flank, one hiding behind a wall. Witch bond goes on nightmare. Aikos casts escort and death ward goes on DJ.
Circle Turn 1
My Ravagers move up with two in threat to bait vengeance. The raptor advances and shoots at Erebus who spikes and manages to take out both of his arms with two boosted shots before repoing back out of threat. A couple of riders move up to behind a house and the rest stay out of threat. Carnivore goes on one of the ravager units and fog of war is cast.
Cryx Turn 2:
Chris begins a stare war. He can’t threat as far as me without TK so hangs back toeing the zones where he can and putting his machine wraith on the flag. The right arc node runs up and Scavvy TKs both of my leading ravagers back, turning them round.
Circle Turn 2:
The raptor shoots Erebus some more and the riders engage, one jamming, the others taking up positions to contest and/or stay out of threat. My unpainted ravagers activate and one charges the arc node doing solid damage, one runs onto the hill and the rest chill in the rubble barring one who stays way back to ensure a feat target. My other ravager unit run to a central location with one running to be within 4 of his flag forcing vengeance if he wants to score. I run a shaman to my flag to score.
1 – 0 to Circle
Cryx Turn 3:
Chris manages to clear his own flag with DJ, Erebus and a TK to deny vengeance. Malice kills the ravager on the hill with his harpoon, Kharibilly kills the ravager that charged the node which is then free to advance. Chris boosts a TK into the shaman needing an 8 to hit but unfortunately misses meaning he can’t stop me scoring that flag.
We both score
2 – 1 to Circle.
Circle Turn 3:
I know Chris is never going to be silly enough to let lord of the feast get on his juniors so i instead decide to use him to clear his flag and put some damage into nightmare. I shoot his machine wraith, Chris forces a re roll with a soul but i hit again and port into him. I manage to kill the machine wraith but fluff the rolls on nightmare and do nothing at all to him. My riders go in and kill his left node before repoing around a bit and the bird finally finishes off Erebus. I charge Kharibs with two ravagers doing solid damage and taking out an arm and then run two ravagers to within 4 of his flag and two others charge and kill the right node. I score again.
3 – 1 to Circle
Cryx Turn 4:
Denny0 charges the lord of the feast in the back and wrecks him and Nightmare kills the two contesting ravagers but the only thing left that can reach and score the flag is Scavvy himself who he doesn’t want to put so close to the bird. DJ walks out of combat, taking a free strike which doesn’t do much so he can get in the zone and then Necromancys a spell into the rider that was engaging him killing it (I think, memory is a little hazy) Khariby kills the engaging ravagers and then malice charges the two on the hill, clearing them both. The shaman stays on the flag and scores again.
4 – 1 to Circle
Circle Turn 4:
I know if i clear a zone i can win the game but don’t have a massive amount that can get to one target so decide instead to do what damage i can and play the longer game. My surviving ravager from my unpainted unit runs to behind the central forest with a shaman and the argus standing in front of him I keep Morv behind all three to avoid any drag shenanigans ending the game. A couple of ravagers finally finish off Kharibilly as Malice is now a casual arm 22 thanks to the souls. My raptor charges Deathjack to try and kill, and if not, disrupt him. DJ survives but he takes a serious beating and is disrupted. My ravagers and wolf rider champ who can get in the back all gang up on nightmare and kill him. My riders try to kill denny so i can score his flag but they fail.
I score my flag again.
5 – 1 to Circle
Cryx Turn 5:
Malice makes his way down to my flag and kills off the shaman who was sat on it. Scavvy moves up and feats. He puts feast of worms under the raptor and Denny 0 puts curse of shadows on it and then sprays the ravagers but fails to kill them. Deathjack flails away at it with his initials at dice +4 and rolls well but still leaves it alive. Chris scores the right zone.
5 – 2 to Circle
Circle Turn 5:
My raptor finishes off Deathjack the riders kill denny 0 and the argus charges into the right zone and puts a couple of points into Malice with a combo strike. I know i’m not losing on attrition at this point so decide i don’t need to feat and instead save my health. Morv moves over to be behind the raptor. Heals a bit and then camps 3.
I score the left zone.
6 – 2 to Circle
Chris looks for an assassination vector but the only long shot he has is to kill the bird with Scavvy then harpoon Morv to Malice after clearing the other ravager blocking the lane but that would pull her into range of the Argus to transfer to so even that isn’t possible. So he instead calls the game.
Again Morvhanna proves how strong her attrition game is but even without the feat, i out threat him and can clear his heavies fairly easily with ravagers and with all of his jacks being expensive, premium jacks there was nothing he could give away to start the trade. Skare 3 would have been a better drop but even so, i think it’s a tough game for Chris. I could have possibly cleared the objective to go 5 clear on the bottom of turn 4 but i didn’t even think about that until part way through my turn and at that point it felt safer to go for the long game which felt secure rather than try and force the win on that turn.
