Vlad 2 vs Mother – Outflank
This week I was up against Mark playing Mother Triple X on outflank:
Eliminators x 2
WG Rifle Corps + 3 Rockets
Axion x 2
Servitors x lots
My plan here was either Scenrio or Attrition. I neutralise a lot of the value of mother’s attacks (anti push and stealth), leaving the only viable targets being Vlad, mechanics and WGRC. The TEP could be a problem (can clear lots of infantry, stealth or put the hurt on bunched up models… like Shock Troopers) so I’ll have to have a plan for that.
I lost the roll to go first and immediately started looking at the plan. I can score first, and also can choose a side with some defensive terrain, but more importantly an obstacle that blocks my opponent. Between the three large bases and the house, that right (bottom) zone is going to be really difficult for my opponent to contest in. I chose that opposite side and already have a plan around flanking hard right and going for scenario.
My opponent deploys Axiom-Tep-Axiom and all the servitors all over the place. I put conquest and the shock trooper boat on the right, mechs in support, Vlad on the right, WG central and eliminators in the middle. The plan is the Conquest can stay central/Right and between him and the shock troopers clear and hold the right zone for vlad to score. WGRC are there to gun down servitors then concentrated fire high value targets late game.
He runs forward, servitors advance and digin, solos flank round the building.
Vlad puts HOF on the WGRC, assail on Conquest, advances and puts down a Windblast. Between this AOE and the house it either makes the axiom/TEP useless for a turn or controls their position. Joe +2 the winterguard then stands in a dumb position (it turned out ok but he should have just stayed behind the house). WGRC advance and after lots of shooting clear 6 servitors. Kovnik + 2 speeds and then the MOW run onto the hill – I prefer to run them first turn here – sure he can get some shots on them but I do have repair and he can’t bring a lot to bare so may as well take board space. Conquest runs to be outside of 10” of Axiom. Eliminators flank hard left to be in contest position late game and outisde of TEP threat, other eliminators go either side of the forest with one in front of Vlad to stop drags.
Mother allocates 3 to an axoim. Firegroup goes up and feat. Right axiom shoots one of the MOW and puts 4 damage on to them. TEP clears out some WG and one of the eliminators, other axiom shoots some WG. A servitor charges one of the eliminators and rolls the hard 9 to hit, killing her and blast damaging the other.
My plan this turn is to take a Colossal and score 2 points. Vlad upkeeps assail and HOF, 2 on conquest. Conquest goes into the axiom and leaves it on 3 boxes (Dice plus 3 with a free charge + 4 normal attacks) – I figure the WGRC can finish that off between HOF, rockets and a CRA if needed. Kovnik gives MOW DP. MOW advance into the zone and start shooting stuff – they leave one servitor in the zone which I leave Vlad to sort. Eliminators on the left charge into a servitor/run and after side step get into a really annoying position behind the forest and contesting the zone. The WGRC get Joe’d and advance ready to take that axiom off the table…….and the theme gives shield guard. I put shots into the axiom anyway as he has to shield guard and it’s easier hitting axioms than servitors. Vlad walks into the zone and razorwinds a servitor, camps 2 and scores 2. Plan is kind of going well…
He loads up the healthy axiom and harms conquest, repairs the other one, moves the TEP who sprays more WGRC and then charges the axiom through the gap. Because of the base sizes and 8” move, the axiom can get to conquest but not into the zone. The second axiom also goes in and between them kill conquest/contest the zone.
I’m feating this turn and want to put hurt into the axioms/go to 4. I upkeep HOF. WGRC get bear strength and charge into the TEP. Between the 4 left at dice off 7 and HOF they kill it to the box – good start! the eliminator hides in the left zone. Mechs heal the damaged MOW, vlad advances into the zone, swaps HOF onto the MOW and razorwinds down another servitor, feats (rolling a 3 so 5 models) and super soldiers the MOW. Kovnik gives them +2. MOW go into the axioms – I put 2 into the damaged one that now has 10 boxes as I can’t afford for it not to die and the rest go in on the fresh one. The first axiom dies and the second has 2/3 of it’s boxes stripped (4 charging pow 17’s with 4 pow 14 assault shots all under HOF – it works!). I go to 4
He spends his turn swinging on def 13 harmed, shock troopers. He has so little to get into either zone that I can aim the 4 WGRC on my turn, kill one servitor and then score my 5th points
Scenario Victory to Khador!
My scenario plan went well. It shows that the head down, go toe to toe isn’t always needed to win the game. Between the MOW/Windblast/House-Terrain/Conquest and Kovnik I could have played an entirely scenario based game without needing to kill any of the massive bases – it’s so difficult for them to contest zones in games like this.
The big mistake for me was not committing hard enough to my turn 2 push. I could have taken a TEP and the Axiom through feated ST and conquest. This would have made it almost impossible for him to come back as I then had scenario and attrition in my favour. His axoim can’t one round my conquest either and I have repair so the next turn I clear everything up, all the while mother no longer has 10” of massive bases to hide behind. Instead I played a piece trading game over 2 more turns. If I had planned this I could have ignored the hill and put the ST in a place that threatens past the zone more (I knew he is feating turn 2 as after that it’s melee as well so the +2 def isn’t that much of a big deal).
In addition there were a few positioning mistakes (eliminators could have been positioned better and the Kovnik/Saxon never felt relevant) but on the whole I was happy with the game. It felt like I was getting back into the swing with Khador and comfortable with Vlad2 again; now to find a pair!
