I managed to get a game in against my buddy Adam this week and he was bringing Minions with a pair of Rask and Maelok. Considering that between both of his lists there was only a handful of models that didn’t RFP, i decided to leave Morv2 at home and bring along another caster i want to test in Dev Host, Wurmwood. Adam won the roll and decided to go first so i took the side with a wall and a hill.
I deployed in a long line, battlegroup and blood pack central to abuse the forest in the middle and ravagers on each flank with WW, my stones ceentrally ADd and the twins and lord of the feast slightly off to the right hand side. Adam deploys in a bit of a blob in the middle with his boney boys weighted more to my right flank. The totem hunter preys my shifting stones and the Twins prey Brine.
(Yes, i know that central forest is huge but we had limited terrain at the venue. I did initially have the house and forest swapped over to practice playing the list without an abusable forest, but due to the flag in the centre Adam suggested we swap them. I reminded him of Treewalker which he was cool with)
Minyans Turn 1:
Adam moves up, putting Mires clouds out in front of two of his swarms, his totem hunter and Orin. Brine runs to behind a house to be annoying and one swarm runs up into the middle forest with admonition on it. Fury goes on the totem hunter.
Circle Turn 1:
I see an opportunity to take an early attrition lead, trading my lord of the feast for a bone swarm. I try to arc a boosted curse of shadows onto it which misses, i then move up and shoot with both units of blood pack and Brighid. The pot tops up the lords corpses who then ports to it and puts 4 attacks into it. Between all of that i leave it on 2 boxes (Sad dice are sad) but at least with grievous wounds it isn’t healing up. My Ravagers fan out, a couple up to try and bait vengeance. My beasts get gummed up behind my pack and just rile up. I pop a rapid growth up to extend the forest.
Minyans Turn 2:
Adam continues to play cautiously. One of his boney boys kills of my lord of the feast, the battered up swarm runs to engage my right unit or ravagers amd everything else begins to slowly rotate around the forest, more clouds go up and rask feats.
Circle Turn 2:
Adam gives me a tricky turn to unpick. The totem hunter is comfortably in threat of my stones and Cassius and with Fury on him he hits stupidly hard. I decide i need to kill it this turn to avoid losing such key pieces so i start by running a ravager up to within 3 of the totem hunter. I hellmouth it and boost damage on the hunter but dice go cold. My bloodpack move up, one of them shooting the ravager who’s engaging the hunter and the others that get within 5 shoot at the hunter but miss. The other unit also shoot but also miss. I run a ravager from the other unit into his zone to contest in the shaman no KD aura but because i’m an idiot i forget to put a solo on my flag. Wurmwood Feats.
1-0 to Circle
Minions Turn 3:
Adam starts by walking up the snake and spraying down the one ravager contesting his flag and puts Dhalia on it. The still alive totem hunter earns a massive promotion and kills not only a stone but Cassius as well, in one hit. 🙁 He then sprints over to engage my blood pack. The soul slave puts ghostly on Brine who then advances into my ravagers with primal and kills off 3 of them before being pulled back with diversionary tactics. The amount of work Adam gets done on my feat turn really worries me and i feel the game beginning to slip away. A ray of light emerges though as my lone ravager in his zone survives 3 separate bone swarms going in on him! What a fucking tank. Rask sits behind some clouds with Orin next to him.
Adam Scores his flag
Circle Turn 3:
My ravagers on the right get stuck into the boneswarms but make sure to keep Brines primal target in range and alive. I don’t kill any but put some good damage in on them. The other ravager unit clear the totem hunter with vengeance moves before the pack shoot and the ravagers charge into his wrastler who kill it. My feral charges Skareth and manages to kill it to the last attack. Wurmwood puts out a rapid growth and camps, a lot. I finally put a solo on the flag and my stones stay in my Circle zone.
I score my flag and zone.
3-1 to Circle.
Minions Turn 4:
Brine frenzies and charges a boneswarm reducing him to a handful of boxes. Without any heavies left to activate Adam doesn’t have much left to counter punch and so decides to try and go for an assassination. Rask moves up and shoots a fury off Wurmwood boosting damage. He puts fury on his last functioning boneswarm who gets ghostly from his soulslave. He then moves his Boney boy into melee with Wurmwood. With 8 fury on Wurmwood he plans on trying to just burn through all of the boxes as my only transfer target is my goat. 46 boxes in all. He d0esn’t manage it though and with Rask flapping in the wind he concedes. (He does let me kill Rask though for satisfaction)
Victory for Circle.
I was honestly very worried after Adams turn 3. Immobilising Wurmwood would have been a massive problem had the game gone on longer. However i think Skarath and his wrastler where a little too close without cover as i didn’t even need a hellmouth or a speed warp to get my feral engaged. I think if he had rask further back and the clouds covering his heavies i’d have been in a really rough spot going forwards. However neither of us had played in a while so mistakes were bound to happen. Wurmwood is a great caster for running Dev host, especially with the male Tharn, being able to abuse the forests he puts out is incredibly powerful and blood pack with access to curse of shadows is crazy good. Especially when they can be protected from retribution with rapid growth.
