So, i was lucky enough to qualify for this years York invitational an event aimed at raising money to help the England and Wales WTC teams with fee’s and to start the process of the England squad selection with the two players that make the final getting an automatic position on the team. It was a very sharky event so I was filled with nerves going into it.
The pair i ended up taking (After a lot of dojo and hesitation) was the following:
Morvhanna the Dawnshadow (2)
Tharn Wolf Rider Champion
Lord of the Feast
Tharn Ravager Shaman
Tharn Ravager Shaman
Tharn Wolf Riders
Kaya the Wildheard (3)
Lord of the Feast
Round 1 got me drawn against Konrad, a Skorne player i’d seen about a lot but never got to play into before. His pair was Makeda 3 in Imperial Warhost and Morghul 2 in Disciples of Agony. With no noteable rfp and only one turn of blind being available from Morghul I decided Morv would be fine. He picked Makeda and we got going!
Makeda & the Exalted Court
Bog Trog Mist Speaker
Max Beast Handlers
I won the roll off and decided to take first turn as i know aspects of Konrads list threaten a long way and I wanted to claim some board space before he could control my positioning.
I put my raptor and riders central so they could go to whichever flank needed support based on his deployment and how the game developed. I then put a unit of ravagers on each flank, a solo with each unit and the lord of the feast front and centre. Konrad put both his turtles on my right flank, both Brutes on the left, Molik and the Gladiator slightly to the left and Makeda right in the middle.
Circle Turn 1
Fog of war is cast, Carnivore goes on lord of the feast and everything runs up as far as it can/is safe. Lord of the feast sits behind a house. Morv chills in a trench with her poochy boy behind her.
Skorne Turn 1
Konrad trundles up the board, Makeda casts Bulwark and everything gets a B2B buddy. A turtle tramples up with eyeless sight and with some really good rolls kills 2 ravagers on it’s own then repo’s out of threat of the others.
Circle Turn 2
Despite me flying up the board as much as i could Konrad threatens a long ass way so this is a turn where i back up and play cautiously. I put a unit in the circle zones and the raptor toes the middle to ensure he HAS to come into me and shoot at a turtle a bit with the raptor. I then Port lord of the feast over to the turtle that threatens the zone and run the gobber chef to block a trample landing spot. I knew i was throwing away lord of the feast for very little but valued my ravagers more in this match up. I pass the clock and let him make the first move.
Skorne Turn 2
Lord of the feast had the desired effect and was a real problem for him to remove. He ended up needing to use the other turtle to take him out which freed up the other but he missed the def 16 chef meaning he couldn’t get at my ravagers with the other. As a result it just toed the zone and shot my ravagers doing damage but not enough to force a tough giving me the perfect vengeance trigger. On the right the Brutes both toed the zone B2B with the agonizer moving up behind to cover them in the aura who is then based by the Gladiator. Finally Molik Khan and Makeda move up centrally with Molik toeing the zone threatening the 99% of it.
Circle Turn 3
With vengeance i can engage with pretty much everything this turn. The raptor opts to not trigger any hyper aggressive shenanigans so just shoots the objective but pants dice leaves it with about 5 boxes left. It then repo’s back into the 1% of the zone Molik doesn’t threaten. I know he can get there with a side step but i’m hoping that if he needs to use an attack on that he might leave the bird alive. My ravagers however, do much, much better and 4 of them charging kill off the turtle. It had taken a few points before hand but even so I was quite lucky to kill it off. My moonhound runs into the zone, hiding behind the building so even if the bird does die he won’t score the central zone. 3 of my ravagers on the left charge and boost their hits but thanks to set defence, bulwark and the agonizer i don’t do a massive amount. The dogo riders then jump in and do a few more points. I keep a member of each unit well back to prepare for the feat and Morvhanna stays in her trench (ensuring she is out of double side step threat of Molik)
Again Nobody Scores! (Cos who needs cp’s)
Skorne Turn 3
It’s feat time for Konrad and he does a lot of work with it! Makeda moves around to get LOS into my ravagers on the right and eliminators at them killing two of them. She then casts a bladed gale and kills the other two. The turtle moves up and again tries to shoot the gobber but he continues to not die. (Best 1 point ever) On the left the brutes poke at my riders killing two of them (One is being proxy based by the flag it’s not actually in a random ass place) Beast handlers move up and enrage Molik and get B2B for prodding and the Glad rushes him. He then charges the objective and leaves it on a handful of boxes, he side steps over and uses his other initial on the bird doing solid damage, he buys on the objective and kills it to remove the fury then buys 4 more attacks on the bird. Unfortunately for Konrad he misses an attack on snake eyes and rolls tripple 1s for damage on another attack leaving the bird alive on about 10 boxes. Molik also takes about half his boxes in plasma nimbus damage. The Krea runs to get B2B with Makeda. Finally the little elephant does -2 str again.
Konrad Scores 1 for the Objective but again nobody scores the zone. (Molik is under the birds wing)
1 – 0 to Skorne
Circle Turn 4
Rough turn but made it through thanks to some helpful dice on Konrads part. (I’ve still yet to make a tough roll so i think it’s fair ;p) I start my turn by clearing the central zone. The wolf rider champ can get in the back of Molik but hyper aggressive is a great counter to her but her, my moonhound and a handful of ravagers team up to drop him. Morvhanna then moves well away from Makeda and the turtle and feats everything back. She heals the birds two crippled aspects and herself for a couple then chills. The bird then moves back to 14 inches from the objective and polishes it off before repoing back out of threat and to block LOS/landing spots to Morv incase i’ve missed something. My gobber runs up to the top of the zone and some returned ravagers get in there too. My other unit and wolf riders continue to put damage into the two brutes who are stupid hard to kill.
I score the centre zone and my objective!
2 – 1 to Circle
Skorne Turn 4
Makeda, her ancestral nerd and the turtle combine to clear the right zone. A selection of beast handlers and the Gladiator get in the central zone but thankfully the Agonizer frenzied so no -2 Str. The brutes continued to boff away at my riders but are now out of control so need hard 10s to hit, they still manage to nail one though.
Konrad Scores the right zone!
2 – 2
(Apologies for the blurry pic. I was getting low on clock so was trying to be faster with the picture)
Circle Turn 5
My rider champ isn’t very good against hyper aggressive beasts so i instead decide to get into Makeda’s back arc as she has no bulwark buddy and i figured big transfers would be better than scratches. The ravagers and bird then combo up to smash the gladiator to bits and the riders get into the paingivers to clear the central zone. My left ravagers manage to finish off one of the brutes at last but one remains so no scoring. My other ravager unit charges the turtle doing some decent damage and contesting with one.
I score the central zone!
3 – 2 to Circle
Skorne Turn 5
Makeda casts incite and kills the rider champ. Marketh then goes in with spells and does crazy damage to the moonhound. The turtle then kills all the engaging ravagers and shoots the pooch to death. The agonizer goes toes the central zone and cries – str.
Konrad scores the right zone!
3 – 3
Circle Turn 6
My ravagers keep plugging away at the brute but leave it alive. One charges the agonizer and does good damage and one contests his zone. My riders attempt to finish the Agonizer but fail so with that i know i have to comit the bird. It’s safer to go for the left zone as the brute is nearly dead and further away from retaliation so it charges the brute and finishes it off. Morv then gets in the zone and heals a bit, camping 4.
I score the left zone!
4 – 3 to Circle
Skorne Turn 6
Konrad gets his turtle in the central zone. And puts out some shots, can’t remember exactly how much it did but it wasn’t much. Makeda repulses the ravager out of her zone and the beast handlers run to contest. Both of out clocks were crazy low so wasn’t much time to do anything else.
(With clock being low i forgot to take a photo, sorry!)
Konrad scores the right zone!
4 – 4
Circle Turn 7
I physically don’t have time to attack and kill the turtle as i’m on less than a minute so i instead kill the agonizer, run the bird to contest the centre to stop him scoring (He also doesn’t really have the time to attack and kill the bird) kill the contesting models and contest his zone again.
I score the left zone!
5 – 4 to Circle
(Big thanks to Mark Whittenstall for taking this last pic as there wouldn’t be one otherwise. I had about 20 seconds on my clock at the start of this turn)
Skorne Turn 7
Konrad also has about 30 seconds on his clock so can’t really clear everything out in time (There was a shaman and 2 ravagers in the middle zone aswell as the bird) and he realises that the best he can do is score to 5 – 5 by clearing his zone which would result in me winning on vps so he instead takes a trample with the turtle and tries to shoot Morv trying for a hail mary caster kill. He clocks after the first shot but i was camping 4 so it was never on outside of mad spikes to kill the bird through transfers and then backlash onto her.
(Again no picture as my brain was melted after this grind of a game!)
This is just the kind of game i love. Long, grindy and close and Konrad was a great and sporting opponent throughout so it was a fantastic start to the day. Onwards to the next!
