Round 4 saw me up against Dan Price. Someone i’ve played twice before, and both times had it come down to about 10 seconds of clock for the two of us combined. He was running Rhyas 1 (I think) In Primal Terrors, and Kallus 2 in Oracles. I’d never played into Kallus 2 before but felt confident that Morv could take a beast brick and i know that Tharn can play into PT just fine. So i dropped Morv and he dropped Kallus.
3 Spell Martyrs
(I may be slightly out on a couple of the support models numbers but this is from the pictures and memory)
I won the roll off and decided that i’d go first for the same reason as i did in my first game. I know Kallus can threat a million miles so didn’t want to give up too much board space. I put big bird in the middle, ravagers either side and riders flanking hard left. Dan counter deployed his AA opposite my riders and ravagers Carniveon and Kallus central and the Seraph and Scythean to the right.
Circle Turn 1
I run up as far as his threat ranges allow. I can’t stay out of overrun and feat range without basically losing the game so just respect the feat range. Fog of war is cast despite most of his stuff having eyeless sight, it’s still useful for arced spells and ice cages etc and carnivore goes on the unpainted ravagers.
Legion Turn 1
So i didn’t re-read Kallus’s card before starting the game and got zapped by an arced brand of fire which killed a rider and then set 3 more on fire, one of the on fire ones dies to a deviation from the AA. Everything else just moves up. A cloud is put on the scythean and the support chills out around his stuff.
Circle Turn 2
One of the fires goes out, and the other rider dies horribly. Losing 3 riders bottom of 1 was unexpected and really rough so i decide to just pull them back so they’re available late game and can be feated on. My bird moves up into skyfire range of the Scythean and does really good damage. The lord of the feast then advances and shoots him (Finally landing a 6) He kills the spell martyr and does a bit of chip damage, then buys and boosts on the Scythean taking out it’s body and grievous wounding it. I nudge my ravagers up further with a couple out there, one contesting his flag to force vengeance (I should have put one from the other unit in his zone to do the same on that side but didn’t)
Legion Turn 2
I positioned out of range of the AA but knew that the Carniveon could get onto my Raptor with a combo of the feat, slipstream and over run. He cast over run on the AA and the Scythean and feats. The scythean kills lord of the feast letting the Raek move up. Then the AA kills the ravager by his flag letting the Carniveon move. The raek then goes in and sets my bird on fire, finally the Seraph shoots the bird to flare it. The carniveon charges and after all is said and done the Raptor is left alive on 5 boxes. He puts a shepard on his flag and the central one and kallus is in his zone.
Dan scores 3!
3 – 0 to Legion
Circle Turn 3
The fire doesn’t go out on the bird but he’d need a hard 11 to kill it. He doesn’t roll it and leaves the bird alive on 3 boxes. The objective heals one of his aspects. I vengeance up the left unit and get some charges into his Carniveon, Raek and Sheppard. I miss the Sheppard but kill off the Raek and do solid damage to the Carniveon. Two ravagers from the other unit charge it and finish it and one runs into his zone. Morv gets to the very edge of kill box and i put my two riders into my zone to score it and my chef runs to my flag. My Raptor finishes his work and shoots the Scythean off the table then puts solid damage into the Seraph. My rider champ goes in but can’t get the rear arc. She does a bit more damage to the seraph then kills the Sheppard with her ranged spear.
I score my flag and zone
3 – 2 to Legion
Legion Turn 3
Due to the position of the wall, flag and my models Dan wasn’t able to charge with the AA. Instead he put up the animi, advanced and shot some fools. He killed the contesting ravager and set two more on fire and killed one then repo’d into my zone. The seraph used apparition to get out of melee with the rider champ then charged my chef and killed him. The forsaken charged and killed the wolf rider champion. Kallus was then the only model that was in range to kill the contesting ravager so he went in and wrecked him he put spiny growth up and finished the raptor off with a spell. The succubus ran to try and block a charge lane to Kallus.
Dan scores 2!
5 – 2 to Legion
Circle Turn 4
Lots of fire rolls this turn. 1 ravager died, 1 toughed and fell over and a few took some damage. I realise that Kallus is only camping 1 and that more importantly. His only transfer target in range is the Seraph. I kill off the Seraph with a vengeance attack and a charging moonhound then put 3 ravager charges into him with the carnivore unit and put him in the dirt with 2 charges and 2 bought attacks.
I think Dans play was a little too aggressive. He would have likely been fine letting me contest his zone and keeping his caster safe. He still had the scenario advantage and it would have been dicey if i’d have been able to kill the AA although a sunder spirit and a feat would have made his life REAL difficult. In any case, Morvhanna claims another victory!
